How to Help a Lactating Street Dog and Her Litter

To help a lactating street dog, feed her roughly twice her normal amount of soft, protein-rich food spread across 3-4 meals a day, keep clean water within easy reach near her litter, and leave the puppies undisturbed in their shelter. A well-fed mother makes more milk, so feeding her is the single best way to keep the whole litter alive.
Why does a nursing street dog need so much extra food?
A mother dog producing milk for a litter burns far more energy than usual. Her body is feeding four, six, sometimes eight puppies day and night, and on the street she has no easy way to make up that deficit.
If she stays hungry, her milk dries up first and the weakest puppies fade away. Many feeders find that simply doubling a nursing mother's food turns a struggling litter into a thriving one within a couple of weeks.
How much more should you feed her?
- Offer about 1.5 to 2 times her usual daily food.
- Split it into 3-4 smaller meals so she can eat little and often between nursing.
- Always pair food with fresh water in a shaded bowl, milk-making needs hydration.
What is the best food for a lactating mother dog?
She needs easy-to-digest calories and protein. Soft, warm and bland is ideal in the early weeks.
- Soaked dog biscuits mashed into a soft porridge, gentle on her stomach and easy to gulp between feeds.
- Plain boiled rice with curd or a little boiled egg or paneer for vegetarian-friendly protein.
- A spoon of jaggery mixed into her meal for a quick, safe energy boost.
Our 4 KG vegetarian dog biscuit pack works well here: soak a handful in warm water for a few minutes and it becomes a soft, protein-rich mash she can finish quickly. Each pack ships with a free 500g of jaggery, the very treat that helps a tired mother regain her strength.
What should you avoid feeding her?
- No spicy, oily or salty leftovers, these upset a nursing stomach.
- No cow milk in large amounts, it often causes loose motions in dogs.
- Never feed chocolate, onion, garlic or anything sweetened with artificial sweetener.
How do you keep the puppies safe?
For the first 3-4 weeks the safest place for puppies is right beside their mother. Resist the urge to pick them up or move them unless they are in immediate danger.
- Leave the nest alone. Frequent handling can make a stressed mother shift her litter to a worse spot.
- Watch from a distance to check all pups look round-bellied and active.
- If she has chosen a risky den, near a busy road or open drain, place food slightly away from traffic so she gradually relocates herself.
When can the puppies start eating?
From around 3-4 weeks, puppies begin nibbling at soft food alongside nursing. Offer the same soaked-biscuit mash, thinned with warm water, in a shallow plate. For more on feeding young strays, see our guide on feeding puppies on the street.
What about water and shelter during monsoon and summer?
A nursing mother dehydrates fast. In Gujarat and most of India, summer heat can dry her milk in days.
- Keep a large, shaded water bowl refilled twice daily.
- During monsoon, make sure the den stays dry, wet puppies chill quickly.
- A simple cardboard box turned on its side under a parked-car cover or stairwell can keep the litter warm and dry.
Should you involve a vet or NGO?
Yes, gently. Once the puppies are weaned (around 6-8 weeks), the mother should ideally be sterilised and vaccinated so she does not face the strain of repeated litters.
Contact a local animal-welfare NGO or the municipal Animal Birth Control programme. If you want to understand how this works, read what ABC sterilisation is and why it helps. If any puppy looks limp, cold or refuses to feed, call a vet, do not wait.
Frequently asked questions
Can I give the mother dog cow milk to boost her own milk?
It is not the best choice. Many dogs cannot digest cow milk well and it can cause diarrhoea, which dehydrates a nursing mother. Curd in small amounts and plenty of plain water are safer.
How long does a street dog nurse her puppies?
Most mothers nurse for about 6-8 weeks, gradually weaning the litter onto soft food. Keep supporting her with extra food through this whole period.
Should I take the puppies home?
Only if they are orphaned or in clear danger. Healthy puppies do best with their mother. If you do step in, contact an NGO for bottle-feeding guidance straight away.
